Christy Wong

Hello, I'm Christy.

Welcome to my blog. I write about my life and interests (or at least I aspire to). I journal almost daily, but I believe that publishing my writing forces me to think more clearly, communicate better, and commit more to my decisions. So here's to learning to write better and refining my voice.

personal

I love when people try guess where I'm from! Most people guess wrong. They say California, noting that I have a really calm, almost monotonous voice and a laid back aura.
I'm actually from Detroit, Michigan. Midwesterners are kind of similar to Californians, but to me, we're friendlier and more humble. I hope you get the chance to visit and form your own opinion. Fair warning: it gets pretty cold but there's a lovely beach downtown and tons of neo-gothic art deco architecture. And the food is super good. You can see remnants of post-industrial America, and even Canada across the water.

I was a pretty bookish kid and I went to an arts high school, Cranbrook Kingswood. There I learned to explore my interests and found a liking for math, music, art, and sports. Later I ended up at Yale majoring in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science. My most memorable classes were algorithms, art theory, and food writing. Turns out, I didn't make a career out of any of those. I ended up pursuing finance and entrepreneurship in NY and SF.

professional

I'm a data engineer for Airbnb.org, a disaster response and emergency housing non-profit. Feel free to ask me about our work or how you can help!

I had a long road to get to where I am now. I've loved every experience and feel lucky to have tried: sell side sales and trading, securitized products, financial research, blockchain infrastructure, freight forwarding, last mile delivery, floral design, and hospitality. The part of my career that stayed consistent is being inspired by good people and great ideas. Now, I'm focused on perfecting my craft and making positive impact.

interests

Things I'm particularly interested in these days? Pursuing joy. Feeding my inner light. And seeking out things that give me purpose and a sense of forward progress.

My main hobbies are running and guitar. I ran California International Marathon in 2023 and set a PR (4:14, also my first and only marathon). I've taught a few of my friends to play guitar. I'm a diehard Swiftie and I don't care who knows it. I like to try new sports and hobbies, especially if I can see big beginner gains. This past year, I've been learning: snowboarding, pickleball, cooking, lifting, and dance.

I've had a lot of opportunities to travel, which I'm grateful for. I've visited over 20 states within and 40 countries outside the US. The longest road trip I did was 670 miles along I-80 from California to Utah. And on a two week trip in southern Africa, I learned to drive on the left side of road.

I love reading, and half-expected to study literature in college. I read mostly fiction because I like stories and seeing the world from another perspective. I tend to like Asian American and female writers. Some books that really resonate with me are: Pachinko, Everything I Never Told You, Chemistry, and the Opposite of Loneliness.

I enjoy food but I'm no foodie. My favorite food is pizza and I would be happy with bread and cheese for every meal. During the Tiger-King days, I had a grand time using up a 50 lb bag of flour making pizza with my covid pod. I've always preferred baking to cooking, which I believe says something. I read a tweet from Karen Chee once that went something like eldest siblings like cooking, an essential survival skill. Younger siblings like baking, which is frivolous.
